Algae Biodiesel

To many, the allure of biodiesel is how it affects the environment versus the use of fossil fuels. Even with biofuel having a lighter impact on the earth, some say there are environmental drawbacks to producing biofuel from things like vegetable oil. Through the use of algae biodiesel, some of these disadvantages are not an issue which makes it even more attractive than traditional vegetable oil-based biofuel.

Alga (the singular form of algae) is a naturally renewable resource that is extremely easy to generate. It can be controlled to produce mass quantities that do not negatively impact ecosystems or the food chain. The algae family is made up of many different breeds and colors and can be seen in various natural settings. The best to use for algae biodiesel, however, is the kind that lies over ponds, also termed as “pond scum”.

Algae play an amazing part in biodiesel production. During the process, it exchanges carbon dioxide from the air with oxygen. Algae biodiesel plants are being constructed near energy manufactories that turn out large quantities of carbon dioxide. Through recycling the carbon dioxide output, the algae being used is diminishing pollution. Other perks of using this method of biofuel production include feedstock and fertilizer byproducts that do not upset sources of other food.

From the aforementioned advantages of using algae for biodiesel, it is plain to see why this field is growing in interest. There are several books that have been written that describe how you can produce your own biofuel made from algae at home.
